Whether you are a beginner who is planning to buy an RV/ a mobile home, or if you just want to upgrade your current vehicle, one of the most important elements to consider is your vehicle’s battery. RVs tend to be the second home for travel enthusiasts, and with so many options for powering your home, you want to make the right decision. What should you choose? The traditional AGM/ lead-acid battery or the much, much more expensive lithium-ion battery. This is a difficult decision, one for which you need to weigh the pros and cons of each battery.

Let’s just start by addressing the elephant in the room, AGM batteries typically tend to be the go-to option for RVs, and it made sense to do so for a long time. However, many dreamt of getting the Gold Standard, a.k.a Lithium-ion batteries for their home-on-wheels, but their wallets still loved lead batteries.

What Is Lithium Batteries?

Lithium Batteries at their basic level contain two metals submerged in an electrolyte solution. Inside the electrolyte solution is an organic compound that prevents the two metals from touching but allows the solution to flow freely. Thanks to the materials used in manufacture, lithium batteries hold more power, last longer, and are lighter.
Lithium batteries have a positive or cathode side made of lithium-based metal oxide, while the anode or negative is graphite. Lithium batteries use the same principle as lead-acid batteries but the metals used are different. There are numerous lithium batteries, but the most commonly used is Lithium Iron Phosphate, indicated as LiFePO4.

Why Lithium RV Batteries?

Lithium RV batteries are high-capacity rechargeable batteries that have become a popular alternative to traditional lead-acid batteries. They were formerly the only type of RV battery available, and although they continue to be the most popular choice among owners, they provide many more benefits than just being more efficient. I'm sure you're thinking to yourself right now, what factors should persuade you to buy this battery despite the high price? There are many reasons to convince you.

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries do not contain heavy metals like cobalt or lead. No pollution caused from manufacturing and usage. They are made of landfill-safe components that are recyclable.

They are still 3-4 times more expensive than AGM or regular lead batteries, but if you ignore the upfront cost, lithium-ion batteries will always outperform AGM in price to performance ratio.
