How To Store Lithium-ion Battery When Not in Use? How To Jumpstart it?

There are two types of lithium-ion batteries commonly used on the market today, all of lithium-ion batteries must be stored scientifically if they are not used. Lithium-ion batteries have a certain self-discharge rate, enerally around 5%-10%, that means it can be stored for 1-2 months without charging. However, this does not mean that lithium-ion batteries can be left uncharged for so long. The proposed storage method is to charge them at intervals even if they are not used for a long time. Next, I'll give you details on how to store lithium batteries that aren't in use.

How To Store Lithium Batteries That Are Not Used For a Long Time?

1.Lithium iron phosphate battery packs do not have a memory effect and can be charged as they are used. However, it is important to note that lithium-ion batteries cannot be over-discharged, and over-discharge will cause irreversible capacity loss. When the machine reminds that the power is low it is time to start charging immediately.

2.In daily use, the freshly charged lithium-ion battery pack should be set aside for half an hour to stabilize the charged performance before use, otherwise it will affect the battery performance.

3.Be sure to store the battery in a dry and cool place, which helps prevent the battery from discharging too quickly. The normal environment of the battery:

  • Charging temperature 0℃~45℃
  • Discharge temperature -20℃~60
  • Relative humidity 50%

The degradation of lithium-ion batteries is mainly caused by chemical exothermic reaction, and high temperature will accelerate the degradation of lithium-ion batteries. Therefore, please keep the Li-ion battery at low temperature or room temperature to slow down the decomposition process of the battery.

4.Singed to pay attention to the use of lithium-ion battery pack environment: lithium-ion battery charging temperature for 0 ℃ ~ 45 ℃, lithium-ion battery discharge temperature for -20 ℃ ~ 60 ℃.

5.Be careful not to mix the lithium iron phosphate battery with metal objects, so as to avoid metal objects touching the positive and negative poles of the battery, resulting in a short circuit, damage to the battery or even cause danger. If there is no BMS protection, the temperature of the battery when short-circuited can reach 1500℃, which can melt a wrench instantly.

6.Choose not to knock, pinch, step on, modify, sunlight lithium-ion battery packs, do not place the battery in the microwave, high pressure and other environments.

7.Borrow use the correct lithium-ion battery charger to charge the battery, do not use poor quality or other types of battery charger to charge the lithium-ion battery.

8.Lithium iron phosphate battery packs should be charged with 50% ~ 80% of the power when not in use for a long time, and removed from the instrument to be stored in a dry and cool environment, and charge the battery every 1 month to avoid the battery being stored for too long, the battery is too low due to self-discharge, resulting in irreversible loss of capacity.

9.The self-discharge of lithium-ion battery packs is affected by the ambient temperature and humidity, high temperature and humid temperature will accelerate the self-discharge of the battery, it is recommended to store the battery in a dry environment of 0℃~20℃.

How To Jumpstart Lithium Battery Which is Not Used For a Long Time?

1.Series rechargeable batteries increase the working voltage, first connect to all ordinary 12V rechargeable batteries, such as 48v/20a rechargeable batteries, and then connect to a series of 12V rechargeable batteries, the working voltage can be slightly up and down to 13v, and then connect to the main charging head can be charged, wait for the light to the green charging head, after the series rechargeable batteries are removed, all ordinary batteries can be charged.

2.Parallel batteries to voltage, a series rechargeable battery connected to a rechargeable battery of the same specifications, such as 48v/20a rechargeable battery, as well as a series connection to a group of normal rechargeable batteries. At this point, the operating voltage will flow into a low-voltage rechargeable battery for charging the battery. After charging, the battery can be connected to the charging head.

3.Low-voltage battery charging, if the lithium-ion battery for a long time without battery charging, it can first use a small bottom-voltage charging head for slow battery charging, such as 60v/20a rechargeable batteries, to 48v/20a rechargeable small battery charging, can also be charged.

According to the above method can be realized to jumpstart the "dead" lithium battery. Lithium should always be used to maintain a shallower circulation system, which can be longer term.

Expanded Reading: How Many Kinds of Lithium Batteries?

Lithium batteries are mainly divided into four types: lithium iron phosphate batteries, lithium manganese manganate batteries, lithium ternary polymer batteries, lithium cobalt acid batteries. Currently the mainstream use of lithium batteries are three kinds of lithium batteries, mainly lithium iron phosphate batteries, lithium manganese batteries, lithium ternary polymer batteries. We have introduced the advantages and disadvantages of various lithium batteries.

  1. Lithium batteries by appearance: there are prismatic lithium batteries (such as household energy storage batteries) square lithium (such as commonly used cell phone battery cells) and cylindrical (such as 18650 batteries)
  2. Lithium battery packaging materials: aluminum lithium batteries, steel lithium batteries, soft pack batteries
  3. Lithium battery from the positive and negative materials (additives): lithium carbonate (LiCoO2) batteries or lithium manganate (LiMn2O4), lithium iron phosphate, lithium manganese dioxide batteries.

I use my trailer about once every two months. Should I disconnect my lithium PO batteries during the storage period
