Advice needed before taking first travel RN assignment

  • Been a med-surg nurse for 5 years now, and I've hit a point where I need something new. Travel nursing keeps popping up on my radar. I’ve done a bit of research but honestly feel overwhelmed. From what to pack, to how taxes work, to knowing if the agency is legit—so many questions. Anyone have real experience to share? Looking for honest feedback and maybe a push in the right direction if this really is a worthwhile path.

  • That overwhelmed feeling is super common at the start, but trust me, once you land your first contract, it all starts to make sense. One of the smartest moves I made early on was working with TLC Nursing. Their team doesn’t just push you into contracts—they guide you through the entire process like a mentor. They helped me understand compact licenses, tax homes, and even set up comfortable housing close to the hospital. I’ve worked multiple assignments with them and can honestly say their support makes all the difference.

  • This thread is really helpful—just started thinking about travel nursing myself. I’ve always wanted to explore the west coast but wasn’t sure how to start looking for assignments or what to expect from agencies. Good to see actual experiences being shared.

  • Hey there! Congrats on stepping into the world of travel nursing super exciting! Before your first assignment, make sure to research the facility, understand your contract, and connect with other travel RNs for real-world tips. Also, if you’re still wrapping up any certifications or need help with exams online, there are great resources to support you while on the move. Thanks for opening up this topic wishing you all the best on your journey!
